For the record, that is a soda can in both pictures. Alcohol and guns should NOT mix

Yep, that is how I spent last Saturday. Pretty much just watched my bro W.C. Bombfunk use a chainsaw (I was there for safety reasons) and then we went to a house of a friend of his to test out his new to him AR-15 rifle.  The baby had just been put down for a nap so we started with our 9mm pistols to give him to time to get fully asleep. Then the 223 ammo came out and the rifle shooting began.  I did a couple of rounds at the 75yard range but Bombfunk went for the 100yard’er. Neither of us hit any targets at our range, but with a new gun, that is no surprise.  What Magic the Gathering cards are to Bookstooge, guns are to Bombfunk. He was grinning like an monkey.

It is good to have family nearby sometimes 🙂

Survive This – Attack of the Ninjabread Men! (Survival Saturday)

maxresdefault

For all the Why’s and Wherefore’s of Survival Saturday, please visit the Intro Post. Thanks!

This is not our usual Survival Saturday kind of post. We were over at the McBombfunk’s and Mrs B had a gingerbread kit from Christmas, so we decided to make that. It was quite the ordeal to be honest.  There is a reason I’m not a cook.

So the adventure began when I started reading the directions. It called for room temp butter. I told Mrs Bombfunk to microwave some, as it was all in the fridge. We melted it right down to liquid. Then the measuring cups they owned had lines halfway up the cup and I thought that was the line. So once I combined all the ingredients it was supposed to be all clumpy together. Instead, it was still just fine flour not really sticking together. Turns out the properties of room temp butter is VERY different from melted butter. Plus, I had used half the amount of water and honey called for.  We finally got it straightened out and ready to shape.

I hadn’t rolled the gingerbread out as thin as I was supposed to, so we ended up with only 6 Ninjabread men instead of 12. And one of them had a “slight” head injury due to my thumb accidentally squashing him when I pushed him out of the mold. But overall, considering the trouble I’d had with putting it all together, they looked like they were on the attack and ready to take on anyone.

While they were baking I put together the frosting/glazing. Well, those darn measuring cups fooled me again only this time it was in the opposite direction and the glazing turned out very milky instead of firming up.

Then the fun began.

Besides the frosting, there was also a bag of hard candy little beads to be used as eyes, etc.  Here’s how everything turned out.

And if that wasn’t enough, we were trying for a stealth Ninja but he kind of turned into a Sad Clown Ninja.

IMG_20190309_210907820

Cthulhu Ninja Clown is SAD 😦

The actual gingerbread was pretty good but the glazing was too sweet and the little hard candies were almost inedible. Mrs B ate her’s like this:

Once it was all said and done, we had fun. If I’d been trying for serious pictures it would have been an epic fail, but like I said, there is a reason I’m not a top chef with my own tv show.  Bookstooge Ramsay I am not!

December ’18 Roundup & Ramblings

12December-336600

Raw Data:

12 Books

3338 Pages

3.67 Average Rating (talk about ending the year on a high note. I’m pretty happy!)

The Bad:

Of Mice and Men – 1 Star (ugh, what a waste of talent)

The Good:

To Kill a Mockingbird – 5 Stars (it should REMAIN required reading in schools)

Hogfather – 5 Stars (Pratchett was bitter but he still wrote really funny books)

Seal of the the Worm – 4.5 Stars  (what a great ending to a great series)

Manga:

Shaman King is really revving up and I’m excited about continuing to read this series each month. This month I read all 3 volumes in one day and wrote the reviews between each volume (I was feeling in a VERY wordy mood) and then just scheduled the reviews for each monday. Just like in November, that kind of pace worked really well for me. I don’t know exactly why nor do I particularly care, as all I DO care about is it is  working.  Bring on the FIGHTING!!!

Misc. and Personal:

I totally slacked in reading this month. January is going to have me reading like crazy to get that 3 week cushion back. I used it all up this month 🙂  Of course, with the Parental Pods, Miss Betsy W & her friend and the Bombfunk’s and the Bookstooge’s all together for Christmas, for nigh on a week, I was doing a lot of things besides reading.

Christmas went well but I started getting sick the Sunday before and was flat out by Christmas. Mrs B caught it from me post-Christmas, so there’s not been much going on after Christmas except trying to recover and drinking of lots of herbal teas and hot water.

Thankfully, I was Tagged by Norrie and so had an easy post on a weekend. I also did another 6Degrees post and that allowed me even more breathing room.  Thank goodness for people who continually tag and remind me that I can do book related, non-review posts!

A lot of time was also spent on writing up my thoughts on 2018. I’ve got that mostly taken care of by now and my Annual Review should be coming out January 1st.

No Cover Love this month as nothing really stood out to me. I’m not going to throw a “pity” cover love to something that I don’t actually love.

The End.

November ’18 Roundup & Ramblings

11November-FFCCFF

Raw Data:

16 Books

5557 Pages

3.50 Average Rating (WAY UP from last month!)

The Bad:

The Darkside War – 2.5 Stars (potty mouth millennial SF)

The Good:

Chasm City4.5 Stars

Alphabet of Thorn – 4.5 Stars

Manga:

Shaman King continues to treat me well. I only read 2 volumes this month but I read them back to back and then spaced the reviews a couple of days apart. I like the rhythm that gave me. It completes enough of a story arc to satisfy me while not overwhelming me. With Christmas coming this month (and our whole immediate family getting together for almost a week over at Mr & Mrs Bombfunk’s house) manga might be the first casualty of a busy month.

Miscellaneous And Personal:

Reviewed Antman & the Wasp. Considering there was a gap between it and Thor: Ragnarok of 6 months, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say no one has to worry about this blog ever turning into a movie review blog. It’s fun to review something a little different, and 6 months might be a bit far between, but I sure don’t plan on making movie reviews a once a month thing.

Survival Saturday came back and while not a smashing success with only an “OK” Broccoli & Cheese soup, neither did we feel like it was something we’d trade to other Survivors of the Coming Apocalypse.

Was able to vent my spleen a bit with a good rant about that filthy Communist invention, The Oxford Comma. Demon Goat contacted me afterwards and said his collecting of souls who use it is WAY up so I’m hoping that ripples back and people realize just how terrible it is. And stop using and supporting it 😉

Had another bout of the stomach flu (which while not requiring an ER visit, did keep me from work for several days) but I was better by Thanksgiving so I was able to partake of the delicious food such a time entails. I also did some actual Giving of Thanks.

We had our first snow storm this month (we got 5inches – 12.5cm) and between all the rain, snow and sickness I didn’t get a lot of work in. Instead of reading more, I ended up dicking around on Youtube and watching various people implode/explode, etc about the latest offering from Wizards of the Coast, the Ultimate Masters Set. Too pricey for me at almost $300 for one box but it has been fun to watch people scream like banshees with their heads cut off!

Cover Love

McKillip’s Alphabet of Thorn wins in the Cover Love category. Kinuko Craft, the artist, just captures the essence of the novel so aptly.  If Mrs Craft wasn’t already married and I was single and she wasn’t XX years older than me, I’d be tempted to marry her just for her art!  Ahhhh, Kinuko, the fates were cruel to us.

June ’18 Roundup & Ramblings

06June - 647381

Raw Data:

12 Books

4575 Pages

3.13 Average Star Rating

The Bad:

Toll the Hounds – 1 Star

The Good:

Mere Christianity – 5 Stars

Graphic Novels & Manga:

Read a couple more Silver Sable comics and realized that my time with this medium is pretty much done.

Miscellaneous And Personal:

Bailed on Survival Saturday. Work has been exhausting this month and experimenting with some food was just more than I could handle on my day off.  Thankfully, W.C. Bombfunk is making me some chicken potpie later today, so I’m still getting some kind of food!

Surviving a Bad Book went well. I announced I’m putting it on  a break since I’m going to start a new series about the Good books I’ve read.

Didn’t do to many more non-review posts. Did a VERSUS post and ended the month with a Confessional, where I admitted I was open to questions that I would answer next week.

Tomorrow I’ve got a Mid-Year Roundup scheduled, so that should have lots of numbers as well.

Cover Love:

Princess of Blood wins the cover love award this time. Whoever Tom Lloyd got to do these covers, he really hit a home run.

I just did some google’ing and it turns out the guy’s name is Jon McCoy.

A Day in the Life of…

Dear Manly Journal,

millennium-spellbook

Today, I write about the trials of my life. This week has just been so hard, it’s not fair.

Take Sunday for instance. I went to church early to start learning the audio visual. Well, apparently not only movies have gone digital. The whole soundboard was digital and I hardly recognized anything. It was pretty discouraging. I’ve been doing sound for 20 years and now it’s all changing?

Bah humbug! We should just get rid of all A/V and tell the pastor to speak up really loud, that is what I say!

Monday it was wicked hot. I ended up drinking 8 of those 1/2liter water bottles just at work, besides what I had at home.

grylls20meme

I didn’t even realize how tired I was until I got home and collapsed on the couch.  I’m only 40, I shouldn’t get that tired yet. I’m not old!

Today was easy and fun, but I totally deserved it after yesterday. Worked on a lake, got out early, chatted up the office staff (Mrs Perl might be a grandmother, but she’s not old either! but that PuddingPop, what a lazy punk. Just sits at that computer and does engineer’y stuff. Phhhh, kids these days, right?)

sub-buzz-12248-1509058103-7

PuddingPop photobombs this post!

Then I went to the gun range with W.C. Bombfunk and broke in my new Sig P938. Shot off 50rounds of 9mm, a whole box and my hand wasn’t even the tiniest bit sore afterwards.

So you can see, this week has been nothing but pure misery. I wish I was dead. Not even a reeses peanut butter klondike icecream bar could comfort me right now. Ha, I’m so miserable, not even TWO of them could help.

493

I don’t know how much more I can take. I love my job, I have so many books to read. everything just seems to be going my way. So how am I supposed to deal with being tired and hot? It’s just not fair!

Survival Saturday – Creamy a la King

maxresdefault

For all the Why’s and Wherefore’s of Survival Saturday, please visit the Intro Post. Thanks!

Today we were visiting my brother and sis-n-law, Mr & Mrs W.C. Bombfunk. I was playtesting my homemade MTG Knight deck with Bombfunk and it was late enough by the time we were done that I asked him if  he and the Mrs would be interested in cooking and trying one of the survival food packs. He readily assented and I hauled out the package.

IMG_20180526_170530343

Creamy a la King by Legacy Premium. The cover on the package was less than helpful and even by looking at the ingredients all I could tell was that it appeared to be rice based. I was guessing a creamy cheese and rice.

Ingredients & Allergens:

Nutritional Info:

IMG_20180526_170210595

Things Needed:

6 cups water

1 package Creamy a la King

Optional items:

Peas

Bacon

Aged cheddar cheese

Oyster crackers

Directions:

Bombfunk did the cooking, as after our Mom, he’s the cook in the family.  He did this in a soup pot and said next time, he’d consider using a large skillet to make the cooking a little more even. He cooked the stuff for 15 and that was just right. The rice wasn’t crunchy and most of the water had been absorbed at that point.

He let it stand for 10minutes afterwards while he cooked himself some bacon.

IMG_20180526_174435696

Even Great Cooks can burn the bacon!

Impressions:

IMG_20180526_173037536

It looked a little watery at first, but here, you can see how thick it really is:

IMG_20180526_174211154

Mrs Bookstooge and Mrs Bombfunk added peas and crumbled cheese to their bowls, while Bombfunk added the crunchy bacon to his and I had peas and oyster crackers.

IMG_20180526_175705709

Halfway through my bowl I went back and crumbled up some cheddar and added it to my bowl. It really needed it, as it was rather bland and the salty sharpness of the cheddar gave it some much needed bite. The peas simply added some color and the oyster crackers, well, considering it was a thick rice dish, really weren’t needed.  I had a ginger lime diet coke, Mrs B had water and the W.C. Bombfunks both partook of a hard mikes.

There was a very faint astringent taste at first, but as soon as I added the cheddar I didn’t taste it at all. I ate my whole bowl, as did Bombfunk and Mrs B, but Mrs Bombfunk could only handle about 2 spoonfuls. This package made a HUGE amount and even with all 4 of us taking a bowl apiece, there was enough left over for at least 2-3 more servings. No one wanted more though, not even me. So we tossed the leftovers and decided this would be something we ate last in a survival situation. Wait until we’re good and starving, you know? Starving makes EVERYTHING taste better!!

Lessons Learned:

Make your relatives eat this with you so nobody has to eat so much. And, misery loves company 😀

Next time, I’d add some diced celery for crunch and we’d definitely have to add some sort of spices or something to help with the blandness.
