Survival Saturday — Awwww, Grottin Taters (Precioussss)

For all the Why’s and Wherefore’s of Survival Saturday, please visit the Intro Post. Thanks!

This month we decided to try Au Gratin Potatoes. Let’s just say, that along with the majority of the Efoods Gold products, it was a big fat failure! Not even Sam and Frodo, starving to death in Mordor, would have eaten this finished product.

I knew we were getting something special when I had to use TWO packages, because good things always come in two’s, right? However, the preservative, that in previous posts I’ve thought was turmeric, was once against front and center. As soon as I opened the package of seasoning and mixed it up in the bowl I knew we weren’t going to get far. It is just bitter and nasty. I would HAVE to be starving to want to eat  more than an exploratory bowl of this stuff.

We both agreed that we liked the potato part and I wouldn’t mind cooking up the additional packages of potatoes and just eating them with salt n pepper or cheese or something, but that packet of “au gratin” flavoring? No thanks!

I might have said this before in previous posts, but the supplier, Efoodsdirect, has either gone out of business or been bought out or something. They no longer exist as a company, which considering their food is supposed to last for 25 years, is wicked ironic, don’cha think?

  1. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you, but again, I had a blast reading your post 🤣 Potatoes with turmeric, I’m sure they are very healthy – at least that’s what we’ve been told – but I seriously doubt they’re tasty…

    1. Because we live up on the 3rd story of a garden style condo building. While it is a 2 bedroom, we chose to fill the second room with books instead of pantries (I’ve thought about canned goods too)

  2. I was gonna say, yikes no thanks…it doesn’t look too appetizing from the photo. BTW, what’s the difference between this and the boxes of dehydrated au gratin potatoes you can get from like Betty Crocker? I’ve had those and they’re actually quite good, and I’m sure they last just as long!

    1. The difference between this and brands like betty and others is that betty, et al, are only good for 6-9 months. I just checked our pantry and we have an Idahoan brand box of au gratin and it good until July 2020. Now, I don’t know if that means the seasoning is good through that or the potatoes or both.

  3. Yuk, that sounds revolting! I struggle to get survival foods here so I might need to hunt down the nearest army surplus stores and see how I get on. I’m buying in dehydrated veg to fill up the final shelf in my food cupboard so there is an endless supply of soup ingrediants!

    1. In all seriousness, with Mrs B’s and my medical conditions, we’re in the same boat. I’m more worried about short term disasters (short term being 2 months or less). After that, we’re toast!
