October ’19 Roundup & Ramblings

10October-A9A9A9

Raw Data:

Books – 8

Pages – 2125

Average Rating – 2.88 Stars

The Bad:

Dark Sky – 1 Star DNF for Content

Places in the Darkness – 1 Star DNF for Content

The Good:

War Factory – 4 Stars of Polity Goodness!

The Ragged Man – 4 Stars of Authorial Improvement

Movie:

Watched two versions of Superman II. The Theatrical Cut and the (released recently on disc & digital) fired Director’s Cut. I surprised myself by favoring the Theatrical Edition over the Director’s Cut.

November will be Superman III. Now are these names original or what?!?!?

Book Give-Away:

Doing yet another Give-Away. This time 8 of the Myth Adventure books by Robert Asprin.  It’s open until November 16, so feel free to enter until then.

Survival Saturday:

With the weather changing and it getting colder outside, I’m probably going to try to resurrect this series for a couple of months. Of course, I’ll ease into things with something so easy that even I can’t mess it up for November.  Who wants a butter stick!?!? 😀 😀 😀

But seriously, it will be something extremely simple and probably not an actual survival food. Now I just have to figure out what this mythical “food” actually is.

Miscellaneous And Personal:

Even though my average rating dropped below a 3, since I dnf’d both of the stinkers almost from the get-go, there was no wasted time or regrets. All it really does is puff up my book numbers from last month and drop my average rating I can live with that. I figure I’ll be culling existing series in November so I’m not reading things that don’t really grab me.

Work is. Started full time at Company New Mid-October. I’m reserving judgement until the New Years. Algebra is going along, but there are times it is really hard to stay motivated, especially when they’re teaching a concept that I KNOW I won’t need and I think to myself “What is the point of this?” I almost feel like a rebellious teenager! Weight Watchers is going fantastic and I continue to lose some weight every week. Slow and steady.

Here is a list of the various non-review posts I did:

Cover Love:

Warlock by Dean Koontz is this month’s winner. It doesn’t get more 70’s than this!

Looking forward to survival Saturday’s! I love that you post your total pages read. Great idea. Love your image too. Happy reading in November and hoping you get more enjoyable reads!

Pages read is a much more “accurate” indicator than straight up books. Especially considering that I’ll tackle a 1K book without even thinking 😀

I’m happy that Survival Saturday is coming back too, even if it does mean that the weather is colder.

Well, I’m in the beginnings of a Charles Dickens book, so I plan on enjoying the daylights out of it 🙂

As long as I get one other good book in, I’ll be super happy for November.

WTG on the Weight Watchers thing — no easy thing.

Bummer about the DNF’s, but hey, you at least allow yourself those. You’re clearly saner than some readers I know/am.

Thankfully, they’ve changed the program since I tried it a couple of years ago and now it is working great for me. It does get a bit tricky dealing with my diabetes at the same time though 😀

Yeah, I’m ALL about dnf’ing. I consider it almost a Sacred Duty to be a good example to the rest of the Book Reviewing Community 😉

In my dabbling with diabetes this year, I’ve been astounded by how sugar, etc. complicates using even “healthy recipes”. I don’t recommend the whole diabetes thing, at all.

Have heard WW made some changes to the program, glad it’s working for you.

  8. Oh yes, start up your survival series again! I miss those. Please do consider the food posts, even though I have no desire to ever try them myself, it’s always funny to see how unappetizing some of this “emergency food” can be 😀

  9. I will look forward to the return of Survival Saturday: it almost feels like reading some post-apocalyptic recipes… 😉

  10. Oh my goodness, I’m the quintessential rebellious teenager! Your attitude sooo resonates with me! 🤣 You think age would temper it but naw …..!!

Yes, that was a dismal rating for the month but I’m happy to hear that you’re not disappointed with it. I think November is going to be a good month, but we’ll see. My read of The Name of the Rose, might make it less positive than expected, depending on my experience.

All the best with your new job. Jobs can be difficult nowadays because they almost always come with people! Hope it goes well!

      😀

Part of not being disappointed in the rating is that I’m just too busy to give it much thought. I hope November is better too. But with a Dickens, it should be 🙂 I’ve never read anything by Eco, so I have no idea what you’re getting into.

Thanks. The first 2 weeks were wicked rough (as in, did I make a huge mistake?) but now things are leveling out like I knew they would.

  11. Glad to hear things are working out fine for the time being. I feel like the reason you’re reserving judgment with your new job is that there are some issues since the day you started but I guess we’ll find out more when 2020 comes. I look forward to the new foods you plan on reviewing! I always had a helluva laugh when you ended up making something super disgusting hhaahahah

I just don’t deal well with change and with as something as big as a job change I want to make sure I’m not reacting to the wrong thing. I figure I’ll talk a bit more expansively in my Year End review post in 2 months 😀

Good luck with Weight Watchers and the job! Sounds like you have your hands full!
This cover is so trippy… Have you considered ever making a trip in time and seeing all the subsequent covers of a popular book? I bet the trends change as much as clothing fashion 😉
