Title: Valor
Series: The Faithful and the Fallen #2
Author: John Gwynne
Rating: 1 of 5 Stars
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 680 /DNF@10%
Format: Digital Edition
Synopsis: |
DNF’s don’t get a synopsis. They are crap and have forfeited the right to any effort on my part that might in any way convince someone else to try them. In fact, I consider it my Civic Duty to NOT do any sort of synopsis for a DNF book and view it as akin to shooting a Communist.
TRUTH, JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY!!!
My Thoughts: |
Ok, I got it out of my system. I’m ok now, honest.
However, 94 characters, 120 chapters and 120 point of view changes majorly contributed to my continued blaseness about this book, this series and this author.
I simply didn’t care. This, and Malice too, had all the earmarks of an Epic Fantasy that I would eat up with a spoon. But I didn’t. It wasn’t even hate this time but just a complete and utter appalling cloud of apathy.
I won’t be reading any more by this author. He just pushes my buttons wrong for some reason.
★☆☆☆☆
Ugh, that sounds scary!
I dnf book 1 and already thought there were too many (boring) characters in it.
Not for us!

I did this to see if there was any chance of redemption.
There wasn’t 🙂

Yep, it was not redeemed…

That sounds like a really bad combination. That number of POV changes would be a real challenge!

It was enough to push me into DNF territory. Plus, I’ll be avoiding Gwynne from now on!

Glad you got that out of your system. Experiences like this one make me so glad I’m reading for me now, and can DNF whenever I like (as opposed to school reading, which I had to finish for the assignment).

Yeah, if I couldn’t DNF stuff I’d probably stop reading 😦

Thank for your reviews of Gwynne. I’m glad I tried even if it ultimately didn’t work out…

It doesn’t always: it’s a matter of chemistry – either it works or it doesn’t…

I see it clocks in at 680 pages. Wow! Waaaaayyy too long to devote time to if it’s not doing it for you. On to the next one!

Exactly. I’ve got a 2 year forward log and that is with some real discipline to keep things in check. And more books come out every week, sigh…

oh dear- shame that this made you feel so apathetic. Honestly that’s how I felt about the first book- I thought I’d really like it but it didn’t click for me.

I just disliked the first book so much that I had to see if it was me or Gwynne. I’m saying it was all Gwynne 😀

And then you see people loving this guy/book…

Yep. I find it rather confusing myself. I guess it comes down to personal taste…

Yikes I’ll avoid this! And 680 pages… wow.

Yeah, Gwynne started his writing career with some big fat books, that is for sure…

Right, he’s off the list.
Hope you find something awesome to read next. 🙂

I can’t remember exactly what is going on with my reading but overall this month has been good! I’m currently writing up a review for the Hobbit. Another 5star read 😀

Oooo, yay! The Hobbit’s one of my favourites – hurrah for 5 stars!! 😀

Welp. That’s at least 6+ books of over 10000 pages you won’t have to read then! 🙂

And might I say, holy smokes on your “liking” spree? My notification bar went haywire 😀

Just got back from a cruise to the Canary Islands…no smartphone, not internet, no blogging; just scuba diving, reading at the sound of the waves, and other fun activities I won’t bother your readers with (lol)…I felt itchy…

As long as the cruise food didn’t poison you, sounds great!

Gwynne is real bad…I don’t know people put up with this kidn of garbage. Just after having read your post I went into BL and GR and LT. Good God! So many glowing reviews of his work. Shakespeare for sure…are people just getting dumber????

Yes, they are getting dumber.
My personal thought is that God only set aside so much “intelligence” when He made humans and the more there are of us, the more that gets spread out. With the results you see today 🙂
Still on BL, eh? I’ve kept my account open, just in case I need to check something and in the hope that anyone else who decides to leave might come follow me on WordPress. However, I’m pretty set for my posts and those who ARE going to leave seem to have left so I’m thinking I’ll probably deactivate my account in ’20 sometime.

I left BL in December 2018. My last post on BL was the end-of-the-year-wrapup-review. I never posted anything else there. I just go there to check some reviews of books I want. But I miss some of the BL’s gals…

I’m cross-talking here, but I can’t find a good way to keep track of what I say over on your blogspot blog. If you know of a good way, please let me know.
Leafmarks was a big punch in the stomach when they closed down. Thankfully, I’d exported my leafmarks data and imported it into LT with very little problems. But if something happens at wordpress and I leave, I think I’ll be done for “social book’ing” and just use calibre on my computer for my own personal use.

Meh. My question is, How is this 680-page, 94-character epic fantasy published, and my own epic fantasy (perfectly reasonable length and number of characters, thank you very much) isn’t???
680 pages???

I obviously can’t speak about your book, having never read it, but Gwynne’s was masterfully written. He has talent and while I don’t like his stuff, I won’t deny that.
