“What is Wrong with People?” Rant

A website that I’ve been having issues withΒ  has recently started trying to turn things around. Not sure if it will work or be permanent, but after a year of nothing, anything is good. They put up a post about Christmas books and reviews and you know what the bulk of the comments were?

“Not everyone celebrates Christmas, why aren’t you being more inclusive?” blah, blah, blah.

Not being grateful that someone was actually posting again, not being thankful for links to reviews and other reviewers, not glad to see some actual forward progress. Nope, nothing but whines and complaints. I’m sure that made the poster really glad they took all that time to create the post. It was like watching a spoiled brat kick an old person who had fallen down on the ice and was trying to get back up.

Just had to get that off my chest. Now I can have a nice weekend. Hope yours is full of good books.

  1. I swear that this time of year seems to bring both the worst and best in people. I try my hardest to concentrate on the positive, but it is difficult.πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

  2. That’s kind of unfortunate. The way I see it, anyone who says Merry Christmas (or really, any kind of holiday greeting) is just trying to be friendly. And in this case (is this booklikes by any chance?) whoever wrote that post is probably just trying to energize the site again, reach out to followers by putting up a nice post. To me it’s the intent that matters.

Telling others not to post about holidays they celebrate is pretty uninclusive in itself. Shamefull even. Good post!

I saw it too. I’ll say no names…I was reading it on my smartphone when I was commuting back home, and I started laughing like crazy!!! Some people just have no manners… It reminds me of a colleague I had a word who was always starting sentences with “ME, ME , ME , ME” WTF!!

    That’s why I “unfollowed” that particular person…

I think they’ll take it in their stride — but you’re definitely not the only one to have been annoyed by that response to the post.

  6. Christmas has long since lost any truly religious connotation for some time now, and become just a period of celebration and connection (or re-connection) with family and friends, so I fail to understand that poster’s comment – unless that was the kind of person who loves to be contrary no matter what. It truly takes all kinds…. ((sigh))

I’ve spent about a day in reflection about this and my conclusion is that setting up a WP was the right move for me for many reasons. I never really had a sense of a personal space on that other site – it was very much a group/social site. And I treated it accordingly. WP feels like my home that I welcome people to rather than a commune where I want everyone to just get a long and be peaceful. I am by no means someone who gets in the business of helping/meddling during high drama, but that doesn’t mean that what goes on doesn’t linger with me while I debate whether or not I should/could etc, etc, etc…
With this latest drama on the heels of everything else? I just have lost my patience. And I feel a little trapped because I get anxiety about unfollowing people without a dialogue. I know that sounds a little cuckoo, but I like to have clarity and closure in such things…even when it might not matter to the other person.

I am glad to hear you feel comfortable having made your WP account.
I am finding it helps that there isn’t one “hub” where everyone congregates, and fights, but we’re so spread out that you only fight if you want to πŸ™‚
The downside is that you have to really search to find people you want to follow.

That incident was the tipping point for me. I’ll keep posting my reviews there, for a bit, but no more social posts and I don’t plan on interacting with people after the new years. I had a tiny bit of hope left with the couple of posts by staff but that reaction just quenched it.

Yeh, that does sound like a bitch move. Only if people would embrace their inner kindness. It would definitely give way to a much brighter world.

  10. I’ve had enough of people feeling entitled to be offended. Too many people have it way too easy if they feel like complaining about Christmas is a priority for them. Pull up your big girl pants, kiddos.
